Conservative responses to the limited disclosure of files involving the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while different voices lamented how heavy redactions cast former President Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department officials justified the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “At no point in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this open with the public about such a delicate legal matter,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter describing the redaction process.
Questions Raised by Redactions
While the former president's name and likeness appear in some of the materials, the extensive black blocks raise significant questions about the information may be hidden beneath them. Some conservative lawmakers immediately called for increased transparency.
“People are furious and walking away,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the law, and implied that a subsequent Congress may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this document release grossly does not adhere to both the intent and the wording of the act,” he added.
A Faction of Conservative Figures Rally Behind the Disclosure
However, some rightwing commentators and former President loyalists came out strongly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—from a justice department run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are entirely redacted, and many of the men depicted in photographs have their faces obscured.
Yet some are not, featuring high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, especially, allowed certain conservative figures to launch the offensive.
“It’s pretty ironic how the Democrats wrongly accused Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a woman that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one explanation Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Former President Campaign Releases Response
Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of no illegal activity by Epstein and has not been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been hiding these files for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about protecting themselves from future revelations, or from what they will try and hide permanently. Therefore they can release as many grainy decades-old photographs as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the response concluded.
Overall Rightwing Commentary Remains Subdued
Nonetheless, overall discourse on the right was comparatively muted following the release, especially when juxtaposed against the loud calls for transparency that came before the congressional vote to pass a bill requiring the documents' release.
Loomer, who recently accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal proponents for a full release. In February, she criticized the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing influencers were given physical binders of materials that included no new information.
