Roughly fifty vehicles have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were marked, in some cases with swastikas, they announced in a release.
Police say they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a individual noticed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored substance.
The liquid had been placed in the shape of a swastika, they reported.
Officers then discovered multiple other smeared vehicles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are banned in Germany under legislation banning the public display of Nazi symbols.
Officials state preliminary tests indicate the liquid was likely human blood.
"Currently there is no indication as to where it came from; officials are currently not informed of any physical harm in connection with the event," they added.
City officials said they were working "to resolve the case" and have appealed to the residents for tips.
A high-ranking political figure stated the attack made him without words and had to be solved quickly.
"This incident hits the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the right-wing terrorist attack half a decade ago," he stated on online, referring to the killing of nine victims by a assailant targeting individuals of migrant background in 2020.
